Michael Clement
An Unconventional Path To Software Testing

I started my testing career after walking many paths: from a theologist to an ethnographer, from a singer to a real estate agent or from a cultural anthropologist to an insurance broker, I was doing everything.

However, among these many things I enjoyed private tutoring the most (math, physics, history, Hungarian language, etc.).

Then I was introduced to IT and testing. I’ve always seen the world a bit differently than others, seeing the problems and potholes where others only see perfection. With the communication skills of a cultural anthropologist it was easy to put this mentality into use as a QA in IT. So I started my career as a manual tester.

I realized very early on that if I wanted to improve my career fast and learn as quickly as possible I couldn’t stick to one project for years. After a bit more than half a year I started to learn test automation on my own, and after one year I was working as a junior test automation engineer. After finishing a 9 month project, on my next project I started as the first and only tester, so I became a test architect both in the manual and automation part.

After 3 and a half years in IT I’ve become a test manager, being in charge of a small QA team.

This path is not the everyday path, and it needs the determination for becoming better every day and the thirst for knowledge. But it is doable, and it is doable for you as well. What you need is the same mindset I had, and a good teacher who knows how to make this journey smoother for you.
